Plug-in Hybrid SUVs
Plug-in hybrid SUV options are increasing. Below you can find all the options in the SUV category plus a minivan. All the different size SUVs are listed in one table as there are not so many hybrid SUVs and this provides a nice comparison of what is currently available. Right now, there are 8 SUVs and one minivan as hybrids that can be plugged into mains for charging the battery. Chrysler Pacifica is closer to SUVs than cars in terms of utility, so that's why it is here. And, it is better than the current SUVs in terms of fuel economy, so it gets the top spot. The first figure is the combined MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) you get when the battery is full, using both gas and electricity from the battery. And, the other figures are what you would get when the battery is down using only the gas engine. Note the limited range of these vehicles during electric only driving. If you travel short distances, then you are really going to benefit from the electric engine. Otherwise, the benefits would be limited as they are going to be behaving like normal gas vehicles in terms of fuel (energy) consumption.

Plug-in Hybrid Technology
In a hybrid vehicle a gas engine is used together with an electric motor to improve fuel economy. Energy normally wasted during braking and coasting are used to charge the battery. The electric motor is used to assist internal combustion engine during acceleration, low speed driving or hill climbing to compensate for the lesser efficiency of the internal engines in these type of situations. The plug-in capability gives the possibility to charge the battery through the mains. So, in theory, a plug-in hybrid maybe driven like an electric car for short distances. And, that is the main difference between plug-in hybrid and an electric car. Plug-in hybrids have very limited range on electric only drive. The advantage with respect to an electric cars is there is always the gas engine as a backup when the battery goes down.
