Hybrid SUVs
Hybrid SUV options are increasing at a rapid rate. Below you can find all the options in the SUV category. We prefferred to list all the different size SUVs in one table as there are not so many hybrid SUVs. Currently, 14 vehicles are in the American market with a hybrid powertrain. The new Kia Rio gets 50 mpg in the combined cycle according to EPA. It is a small SUV, just a little bigger and higher than a hatchback. Nissan Rogue also has hybrid versions as the best-selling SUV. However, the only US brand, the Jeep Wrangler, even in the new form fails to impress with its hybrid offering with just 24 mpg combined. It should do better. It cannot rely on brand appeal forever.

Hybrid Technology
In a hybrid vehicle a gas engine is used together with an electric motor to improve fuel economy. Energy normally wasted during braking and coasting are used to charge the battery. The electric motor is used to assist internal combustion engine during acceleration, low speed driving or hill climbing to compensate for the lesser efficiency of the internal engines in these type of situations. Hybrid SUV's are especially useful in urban situations where more fuel is wasted.
